What's Wordplay?
Wordplay is Charlottesville’s own live game show. It’s a team-based competition for people who love words, vocabulary, pop culture, history, literature, and showing off how smart they are. If you enjoy crosswords, word games, and trivia, Wordplay is for you!

Who benefits?

Wordplay is a fundraiser for Literacy Volunteers Charlottesville-Albemarle. LV/CA is an independent, non-profit organization that offers free, confidential, individualized basic literacy and ESL instruction to adults.

When and where is it?

Wordplay 2009 will take place in April at the Omni Hotel. Date to be announced. We play in teams of three, so if you want in on the action, start thinking about who you want on your team.

What’s the game like?

Go play a little sample game. Note that in the live competition, there are time limits for each question. In the sample, you can take as a long as you want. You need to be able to view Flash movies, and you need sound.

Is it for adults only?

Wordplay is open to everyone who wants to participate on a team of three. The game is geared for adults, but teens should do fine.

How do we sign up?

To participate, you purchase a sponsorship. There are many different levels. Team sponsorships start at $500. You can purchase a sponsorship online or download our sponsorship form and send it in.

The competition is structured in several rounds, each of which is designed to challenge you to ponder, listen, look, count, remember, spell, and generally, think about what you already know in a new way.

Each team is comprised of three people. You will be provided with pads and writing utensils. Each team has a whiteboard they use to present their answer to the judge for their table.

Each question is worth points. Your judge will keep score for your table.

How is each round played?

If we told you that, it wouldn’t be any fun. We can tell you that if you’ve participated in previous years, this year’s edition is all new! Go have a look at our sample game.

Should we study?

That’s up to you. Our recommendation is that you get a decent team together, show up, and have fun. Each round is going to require you to use different skills. That’s why it’s more fun to be on a team, rather than to play as an individual.

How hard is it?

It’s a competition. There are a lot of teams. If you’re a relatively well-educated person, you should do fine. You won’t feel too stupid to play. But you’ll have to work pretty hard to win!

What should we wear?

We have a costume contest. If you want to participate, be creative!

How do we sign up?

You can sign up and pay online. The minimum sponsorship level for teams is $500. Our Team Chairperson is Liz Allan. You can her or call her at 434-971-2989.

What time should we arrive?

Wordplay starts at 6pm. Teams should arrive between 5:00-5:30 so you have some time to eat and get settled.

NOTE: 2008 Team Sponsorships are now SOLD OUT. If you were thinking about having a team for 2008, we’re sorry, but we’ve reached the limit of the capacity of our room with over 30 teams this year! We encourage you to come on out to the event and cheer on your favorite team.

Each year we have added more teams that have increased the friendly competition, fun, and enthusiastic participation of many businesses, book groups, and individuals.

Contributing to the excitement and fun are the teams’ costumes and the cheering section that all the teams are encouraged to bring. Awards are not only given for the top three teams, but also for the best costume and most enthusiastic cheering section!

All attending the event will partake in a delicious buffet, and a chance to win prizes. A cash bar will be available throughout the evening. The audience will also have the chance to test their knowledge and compete for awards and door prizes. Finally, the show will feature local personalities as Game Master and Moderator-come see who our celebrities are for this year!
